My MailChimp account was suspended again and I had to go through the process of getting it investigated and reinstated. Not good!

So I have been thinking what I could have done different.

  1. I could have simply made a couple of Christmas relevant Squidoo Lens and sent the subscribers to them instead of affilaite offers and still made a possible profit off of the traffic.

  2. I could have just had the original first email with the file link on it have the one affiliate offer on it and left it at that. ( Why have the email list then)

  3. I could have put the file on my site and just linked the YouTube video to the site ( but I was trying to do this without a site)

  4. I could have linked the YouTube video to a Squidoo Lens and had a link there to download the file ( where would I store that file at ?)

  5. I could have installed a Wordpress Plugin that handles the email auto responder thingy via my site. ( I am looking at that right now and moving my mailing list from MailChimp to this ( I might be selling the site and including a mailing list would add value?))

This also got me to thinking that much like moving the BIBPodcast from BlogTalk Radio to iTunes allowed Jonathan and Russell to have control over their content, what steps should be taken to have control any mailing list that are built? A big list could be worth some serious cash and if the mailing service shuts you down, what can you do and would you be able to recover your list?

Wow, what a great test! And the main point here is that you did the ONE thing you absolutely must do to achieve success. You took ACTION! Ok, now on with the analysis.

The idea of offering the "postmark" file in exchange for email addy is genius. I guess the first thing I would attack would be the immediate unsubscription thing. Good content in the first email or additional info with the download maybe -  with the promise of additional great stuff if they stick around.
Overall, I think using plenty of good content with occasional promos is the way to go. Maybe 3or 4:1 or more.  Can't go wrong with good content.

Don't know about that thing from across the pond. Interesting.

Regarding the email, you definitely want to build a list. Valuable for you and adds value for a sale if you go that route. I know that hosted email accounts can be a pain (Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, aWeber) Jonathan uses aWeber but I have heard of deliverabiity problems lately. I use Autoresponse Plus which is now arpReach which I install on my own hosting acct.  I had high hopes for the new version but it fell short of my expectations. However, I still prefer it to the subscription type services.

Great test Jason. Keep us updated.
